VGA, DVI, HDMI and other common video interfaces introduced

HDMI

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a digital video/audio interface technology and is a dedicated digital interface suitable for image transmission. It can simultaneously transmit audio and video signals with a maximum data transmission speed of 18 Gbps. . At the same time, it is not necessary to perform digital/analog or analog/digital conversion before signal transmission. HDMI can be combined with Wideband Digital Content Protection (HDCP) to prevent unauthorized copying of copyrighted audio and video content. The additional space provided by HDMI can be used in future audio and video formats. And because the demand for a 1080p video and an 8-channel audio signal is less than 4 Gbps, HDMI has a large margin. This allows it to use one cable to connect the DVD player, receiver and PRR, respectively.

HDMI can not only meet the 1080P resolution (1.3 version of the basic in the 5760*3240 resolution), but also supports digital audio formats such as DVDAudio, supports eight-channel 96kHz or stereo 192kHz digital audio transmission, can transmit uncompressed audio signals and Video signal. HDMI can be used for set-top boxes, DVD players, personal computers, video games, integrated amplifiers, digital audio and televisions. HDMI can transmit audio and video signals simultaneously.

HDMI supports EDID, DDC2B, so HDMI-equipped devices have "plug-and-play" features, and the signal source and the display device will automatically "negotiate" and automatically select the most suitable video/audio format.

Compared with DVI, the HDMI interface is smaller and the HDMI/DVI cable length is less than 8 meters. As long as one HDMI cable, you can replace up to 13 analog transmission lines, which can effectively solve the problem of the connection behind the home entertainment system messy.

DVI

DVI (Digital Visual Interface), digital video interface. It was launched in 1999 by the DDWG (Digital Display Working Group), which is composed of companies such as Silicon Image, Intel, Compaq, IBM, HP, NEC, and Fujitsu. Interface standard.

Considering the compatibility issue, the graphics card generally adopts the DVI-I interface, which can be connected to the ordinary VGA interface through the conversion connector. The monitor with DVI interface generally uses a DVI-D interface, because such a display also generally has a VGA interface, so no DVI-I interface with analog signals is required. Of course, there are a few exceptions, some monitors only DVI-I interface and no VGA interface. The DVI interface of the display device has the following major advantages:

First, fast

DVI transmits digital signals. The digital image information is directly transmitted to the display device without any conversion. Therefore, the digital-analogue-digital cumbersome conversion process is reduced, and the time is greatly saved. Therefore, it is faster. Effectively eliminate smearing, and use DVI for data transmission. The signal is not attenuated and the color is purer and more realistic.

Second, the screen is clear

The internal computer transmits binary digital signals. If you use the VGA interface to connect the LCD display, you need to first convert the signals through the D/A (digital/analog) converters in the graphics card to three primary signals of R, G, B, and line and field synchronization. Signals, these signals transmitted to the liquid crystal through the analog signal line also need the corresponding A / D (Analog / Digital) converter to analog signals and then a high-definition video high-definition video (in general, single-channel DVI interface, the maximum refresh rate Can only support up to 1920*1080*60hz or 1600*1200*60hz) to convert into a digital signal to display the image on the LCD. In the above-mentioned D/A, A/D conversion and signal transmission process, it is inevitable that signal loss and interference will occur, resulting in distortion of the image or even displaying an error. However, the DVI interface does not need to perform these conversions to avoid loss of the signal. The sharpness and detailed expression of the images have been greatly improved.

Third, support HDCP protocol

The DVI interface can support the HDCP protocol, laying the groundwork for high-definition video with copyright. However, if you want the video card to support HDCP, the DVI interface alone is not enough, you need to install a dedicated chip, but also pay a lot of HDCP certification fees, so really support HDCP protocol graphics card is not much.

HDCP signal from the interface form, pin definition, data format, etc. are the same as DVI, but considering the reasons of confidentiality, the data is encrypted and must meet the HDCP protocol requirements. Taking into account that this is only a different level of agreement, we can consider the two equally.

The DVI interface and VGA interface are different. There are many standards for the DVI interface. It must be understood when using the monitor. DVI is divided into 5 types of standards. Among them, DVI-D and DVI-I are classified into two types: "dual channel" and "single channel". What we usually see is the single-channel version. The cost of the dual-channel version is very high, so only some professional equipments are available. It is difficult for ordinary consumers to see.

DVI-A is an analog transmission standard that can be seen in late-stage large-screen professional CRTs. However, because there is no essential difference with VGA, performance is not high, so DVI-A has actually been abandoned. As for the DFP interface, this is an early digital specification that has been deprecated.

VGA

VGA (Video Graphics Array) is a video transmission standard that IBM introduced with the PS/2 machine in 1987. It has the advantages of high resolution, fast display speed, and rich colors. It has been widely used in the color display field.

The VGA data cable is used to connect the VGA interface cable. The finished cable has a length of 1.5 meters, 2 meters, 3 meters, 5 meters, 10 meters, and 15 meters. There are generally no more than 15 meters of finished cable because When the signal transmission distance exceeds 15 meters, the quality of the VGA signal will be seriously degraded. If you need to transmit the VGA signal generated by the video card more than 15 meters away, if not more than a few times, you can weld a VGA cable to try the effect. If the distance is too far, you should use the VGA-CAT5 converter directly.

BNC

The BNC connector is a connector for coaxial cable. The full name is Bayonet Nut Connector. This name describes the connector shape visually. It is also known as the British Naval Connector.

The BNC connector is used for the transmission of radio frequency signals, including the transmission of analog or digital video signals, the connection of amateur radio equipment antennas, the connection of avionics equipment and other electronic test equipment. In the consumer electronics field, BNC connectors for video signal transmission have been replaced with RCA terminals. With a simple adapter, RCA terminals can be used on devices that only have BNC connectors. The BNC terminal was widely used in 10base2 Ethernet. Since the coaxial cable is replaced by a twisted pair, it is difficult to see a network card with a BNC terminal. Some ARCNET networks terminate the coaxial cable at the BNC terminals.

BNC connectors are available in 50 ohm and 75 ohm versions. When a 50-ohm connector is connected to other impedance cables, transmission errors are less likely to occur. Different versions of connectors are compatible with each other, but if the cable impedance is different, the signal may be reflected. Usually BNC connectors can be used at 4GHz or 2GHz.

The 75-ohm connector is used for video and DS3 connections to the telephone company's central office, while the 50-ohm connector is used for data and RF transmissions. A 50 ohm plug incorrectly connected to a 75 ohm socket may damage the socket. 75 ohm connectors are used in VHF applications.
