Russian scientists develop new form of polymer materials for solar cells

According to a report by the TASS, the Far Eastern Federal University of Russia and the scientists of the Institute of Chemistry of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have jointly developed a polymer luminescent material (light energy collector) capable of converting ordinary windows into solar panels. There is potential for further development of power generation forms that can convert sunlight into electricity.

Scientists predict that using such a polymer light-emitting material as a substrate can produce a low-cost film that is attached to the surface of ordinary panes of glass or any other object that is exposed to sunlight, and converts the concentrated light energy into electrical energy.

Traditional solar panels require a relatively large area, are quite expensive, and have low photoelectric conversion efficiency under diffuse scattering light conditions. Due to the ability to use the scattered light that is common in the environment, this light collector can not only reduce the demand for photoelectric converters, but also place the converter on the surface of any object including densely populated urban buildings.
