Covestro has successfully developed a new polyether carbonate based on carbon dioxide technology – the company is promoting the technology on the market under the cardyon brand – and is now moving forward with a range of technologies New thermoplastic polyurethane.
According to the German chemical company, Desmopan 37385A is the first representative of a new line of TPUs containing CO2-based polyether carbonates.

Because Cardyon has a carbon dioxide content of up to 20%, the new TPU material has a lower carbon footprint than conventional materials.
Desmopan 37385A has a Shore hardness of 85. According to Costron, its mechanical properties are "at least similar to conventional TPU hardness."
The tensile strength is 36 MPa and the elongation at break is 660%. This plastic is designed for extrusion but is also suitable for injection molding.
“The range of applications covers typical applications of traditional TPU grades with comparable hardness, from soles and uppers to sportswear, handles and handles, to packaging for sensitive electronics,†explains Georg Fuchte, a TPU expert at Covestro.
Covestro plans to expand the TPU series based on changes in hardness. According to the company, a product with a Shore hardness of 95 and rapid melting and solidification during processing is currently in the research and development stage.
Fuchte explained: “Therefore, our goal is to apply economically important applications in a short period of time.â€
In January 2016, Covestro invested 15 million euros in a new production plant to produce CO2-based polyols for flexible polyurethane foam at the Dormagen site near Cologne.
In addition, the company said it is developing a new type of carbon dioxide-based polyol for rigid polyurethane foams, for example, for building insulation, automotive and sports equipment.
