Chinese scientists invented flammable ice drilling thermal recovery technology

The reporter learned from Jilin University that after more than 10 years of technical research, the research team of Jilin University has developed key technologies for cold drilling thermal recovery of natural gas hydrates in the land, which fills the gap in the domestic field and won the second prize of the 2016 National Technology Invention Award recently. .

Natural gas hydrate, also known as flammable ice, is distributed in deep-sea sediments or in permafrost. It is an ice-like crystalline material formed by natural gas and water under high pressure and low temperature conditions. After combustion, only a small amount of carbon dioxide and water will be generated. The pollution is much smaller than coal, oil, and natural gas, but its energy is ten times higher than coal, oil, and natural gas. In addition, the flammable ice reserves are huge. It is estimated that the total amount of organic carbon contained in natural gas hydrates is equivalent to twice the total amount of known coal, oil, and natural gas in the world, and is internationally recognized as the replacement energy for oil and natural gas.

In 2004, under the funding of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Land and Resources and the China Geological Survey, Jilin University carried out R&D of land-based natural gas hydrate drilling and production projects. Sun Youhong, the vice president of the project, led the research team to the conditions of international technology monopolies and lack of reference materials. Under the independent research and development, a total of more than 30 scientific researchers from geology, geological engineering, thermal sciences, bionics, chemistry and materials science and other disciplines have formed a “national team” of combustible ice drills.

After more than 10 years of technological breakthroughs, the scientific research team has overcome many technical problems such as construction at high altitudes and severe cold areas, and successfully developed domestic and international key technologies for hydrate cold drilling thermal production with independent intellectual property rights. Different from the internationally accepted principle of “passive pressure insulation sampling”, the new technology first proposed the principle of “active cooling and freezing sampling”, invented the drilling mud enhanced refrigeration method, the hydrate bottom quick freezing sampling method and the high temperature pulse thermal excitation. At the altitude of 4,000 meters in the Muli Basin, Qinghai Province, the scientific research team used this technology to obtain a physical sample of China's terrestrial gas hydrates for the first time, and successfully achieved land-based gas hydrate exploration, breaking the monopoly of foreign hydrate drilling sampling technologies.
