According to foreign reports, South Korea's Posco Steel Corporation (Posco) announced today that it will acquire a 20% stake in US graphene producer XG Sciences to create a diversified business.
Posco Steel said in a statement: "Positive Steel has obtained a license for graphene production through the acquisition of a partial stake in XG Sciences. We plan to build a graphene plant, which is expected to be put into production as early as 2012."
Posco Steel pointed out that graphene is widely used in various industrial materials, batteries and electronic components. XG Sciences is one of the two largest companies in the world for the commercial production of graphene, and the other is Volbeck Materials.
Posco Steel hopes that the acquisition will further complement its core business, as coking coal, which is a by-product of the steel manufacturing process, produces graphene.
