Minister of Commerce Chen Deming: Improving Environmental Standards for Rare Earth Mining

On December 15, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming said in the Washington-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade in Washington, "China has 30% of the world's rare earth resources, but it supplies more than 90% of the world's rare earth demand. There are people who politicize it, and it is too unconscion."

Chen Deming pointed out that in the past 15 years, China has supported more than 90% of global rare earth exports and supplied them all over the world. According to the US Geological Survey, China’s rare earth resources have fallen from 43% of the world to only 15% in the past 15 years. 31%. He also stressed that the reason for China's reduction of rare earth production is purely because of environmental protection. China has also restricted the use of its own country when reducing production. This approach is in line with China's commitments when participating in the WTO.

In addition, Chen Deming also said that after the discussion between China and the United States on rare earth issues, it will continue to discuss the following three points with other countries: how to improve the mining technology of rare earths to meet environmental protection requirements; how to make other countries with rare earth resources It is also possible to mine rare earths on the basis of environmental protection; how to recycle rare earths and how to find alternatives to them.
