In the past few years, flexible electrons have slowly become a popular trend. It sounds a bit like a science fiction movie. The phone can be rolled up and put in its pocket; the user can fold it up and take it to a friend's home. Now, new discoveries by the University of Houston's team of scientists have added to the possibility of flexible electronics. They said that the use of gold nanomesh materials can create a perfect surface for electrons, and electrons with perfect surfaces will have both flexibility, conductivity, and transparency.
Although there have been flexible smartphones and even flexible batteries before, no one has yet been able to create a material for elastic electronics. These elastic electronics should have features such as stretching, folding, and portability. In fact, no one has yet been able to create a device with three desirable characteristics of softness, conductivity and transparency.
The University of Houston team used gold nanowire materials to create a mesh material. They inlay the mesh material into a transparent polymer. The reason they chose gold is that it is better than silver and copper, which have already been tested. It will not be easily oxidized, so it can maintain longer-term conductivity. To test the mesh material created, scientists stretched it up to 160%. When stretched to its limits, the nanoweb material becomes less conductive, but when it returns to its original shape, its conductivity also returns to that before unstretched.
What we know is that when smart phone manufacturers study soft models, these models are not completely soft and they cannot be stretched. This new discovery means that future smartphones may be completely soft and stretchable, and more importantly they may still be transparent. Now that the size of a smartphone is slowly approaching the size of a tablet, smart phones that can be rolled up or folded into pockets may be very popular.
