Fast airbag sensor provides greater safety (2)

Pressure satellite sensor: a quick reflection of side collisions

In the event of a side impact, the activation of the side and head airbags requires a more rapid response than the front airbag. In this case, the system must inflate the airbag within 5-10ms. Because there is only a few centimeters of space between the door, the B-pillar, and the occupant, the airbag can protect the driver and the co-pilot occupant from a large amount of anti-collision buffer space in the event of a frontal collision. More than ten automakers have installed Continental's pressure satellite sensor, ClipSat, which covers most of the vehicle and responds quickly, but does not falsely trigger the opening of the airbag.

If a side collision occurs, the sensor will record the strength of the door being deformed by the collision. The airbag control unit will analyze the collected data through software and then make a decision on whether to activate the side airbag. Because the sensor is in the collision, by measuring the entire door instead of relying on the deceleration measured at a certain fixed part of the vehicle, the collision occurs when the side column collides, that is, the vehicle collides with the narrow obstacle, or Good results can still be achieved when a SUV with a major impact point is usually higher than other vehicles.

Continental's latest generation of pressure satellite sensors, called ClipSat, also saves time and money during assembly. The clipSat can be easily snapped onto the interior panel of the door without any other tools and fastenings.

Effective, flexible and economical module design airbag control unit

Continental's chassis and safety system components are among the world's leading suppliers of airbag control units and sensors. The highly efficient and economically designed Safety Platform (SPEED) airbag control unit developed by the Chassis and Safety Systems Division uses a three-stage modular design to better accommodate the needs of different vehicle manufacturers and markets.

Some basic functions such as front airbags and side airbags are included in the S-Series in the SPEED platform, while the M-Series features multi-stage (open) front and side airbags as standard. Other features such as vehicle rollover protection, such as protection when the vehicle is about to roll over, can also be integrated into the platform as an upgrade function. The SPEED L series is protected against front and side impact and rollover detection as standard. However, the S-Series can only detonate up to 14 detonators in the airbag or tensioners in the seat belt. Up to 30 starters can be installed on the L-Series interface. As a result, SPEED has the flexibility to tailor the choice of airbag control units to the manufacturer's requirements, maximizing the benefits of the same engineering design, standard interface and mass production.
