According to the report of the Physicists Organization Network on June 12, A123 Systems, a battery manufacturer based in Massachusetts, announced on Tuesday that they have developed a new type of automotive battery that can work at extreme temperatures and reduce or even eliminate heating and cooling. The demand of the system has brought more opportunities to reduce the cost of electric vehicles.
The company calls this new technology the next-generation nanophosphate EXT lithium-ion battery technology, which increases the power capacity at low temperatures and prolongs the life at high temperatures. By extending the core technology capacity, the battery can adapt to a wider range of operating temperatures.
Test results show that at 45°C, the battery can still maintain more than 90% of its initial capacity and still provide starting power at minus 30°C. At low temperatures, the nanophosphate EXT provides 20% to 30% more electricity than standard nanophosphate chemistry; at high temperatures, the battery life is 2 to 3 times that of ordinary lithium-ion batteries, which is lead-acid 10 times the battery. The advent of this battery technology means that even in extreme temperatures, the battery pack does not require heat dissipation or heating, which is expected to reduce the complexity of electric vehicle design, improve performance and stability, reduce overall costs, and save a lot of money for users.
Yan Qiaozeiike, a professor of mechanical engineering at the Ohio University who participated in the test, said that the new technology "may be a battery technology breakthrough that changes the rules of the game for the electrification of vehicles, including emerging micro hybrid vehicles."
"We believe that nanophosphate EXT overcomes the key limitations of current lead-acid standard lithium-ion batteries and other advanced batteries." The eco-car report analyst John Walker said that new technologies can help reduce the cost of "heat management." Most electric cars require a pump-type cooling system to remove excess heat generated by the battery pack, which "dissipates energy and reduces mileage." He said that if this new battery technology is indeed effective, "will reduce weight, reduce complexity and reduce the cost of plugged-in vehicles in the future, making electric vehicles more competitive in the market."
A123 Systems is one of the companies supported by the U.S. government. In 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama allocated US$249 million to support the company’s R&D of lithium-ion battery projects. In the same year, the company went public on Nasdaq, and its share price on the first day of trading soared by 50%. The recent recall of the A123 battery due to quality problems caused A123 Systems to make a huge loss in the first quarter of this year.
