The size of the gap under the clothing is directly affected by the amount of loose clothing, style, and the number of layers of clothing. The nude and the dummy after wearing the fire fighting suit were scanned to quantify the distribution of the clothing gap after dressing. The “fire man” burning experiment was used to analyze the relationship between the human body surface burn rating and the amount of clothing gap. Studies have shown that the distribution of the under clothing gap has a certain influence on the thermal protection performance of fire service clothing, and parts with a small average gap under the clothing such as the shoulder and chest are more likely to cause burns.

Using warm manikins to compare different types of fire suits (M, L, LL code) and multi-layer fire suits (represented by MT, LT, and which are represented by MT, LT) in the static and dynamic (walking) garments. The overall thermal resistance, the study of changes in the amount of clothing and the state of the gap on the clothing thermal resistance. The results show that: when static, the thermal resistance of single-layer fire protection clothing increases with the increase of clothing type, but the difference is not significant. The thermal resistance of multi-layer fire protection suits increases significantly, and the difference between different types of fire suits is significant. When dynamic, the thermal resistance values ​​of all garments were significantly reduced, and the changes in the garments with large size were more significant, indicating that the human body movements increased air convection under the clothing, and the thermal insulation performance of garments was significantly reduced, and the clothing with large amount of looseness changed more significantly.

The measures such as looseness and coverage were used to quantify the clothing underclothing gap and analyze the effect on clothing thermal resistance. The results showed that there was a positive correlation between clothing thermal resistance and looseness, and when the amount of looseness reached 3.5cm, the change of clothing thermal resistance tended to be stable; the clothing thermal resistance also increased with the increase of clothing coverage.

By measuring the metabolic heat production of the human body when wearing 6 different styles of protective clothing and the circumference of the upper arm, trunk, thigh, etc., the influence of the gap under the clothing on the energy consumption of the human body is studied. The results show that wearing large protective clothing will cause inconvenience to the movement of the human body, thereby increasing the body's physiological load and causing discomfort.

In summary, the traits of clothing under clothing have a direct impact on the wearing comfort of protective clothing. By quantifying the clothing under clothing gap and establishing its relationship with the evaluation index of wearing comfort is the focus of the study.
