Thickeners have a variety of different classification methods, from organic to organic, inorganic, according to the production method, natural, synthetic, according to the way of adding silk to the swelling / dissolution, association type, and so on. Common thickeners for architectural coatings include HEUR (such as PU), HASE (ASE), HEC (HMEC), and inorganic bentonite, attapulgite, and the like.

Characteristics of various thickeners:

Polyurethane or HEUR thickener, nonionic type has surfactant properties, water, cosolvent, surfactant have a great influence on thickening effect. Anti-splash, leveling, improve film fullness; good scrub resistance, alkali resistance, thickened latex paint without flocculation, this non-flocclic coating has luster potential, and the coating film composed of non-flocculating coating is dense It has good resistance to penetration and good corrosion resistance; it is not sensitive to electrolytes and has no biodegradation.

Alkali-soluble or alkali-swellable HASE (ASE) thickener: an anionic thickener, sensitive to pH, thickened latex paint is a flocculation uneven system, matt potential. Water, alkali and corrosion resistance are not good, sensitive to electrolytes, no biodegradation.

Cellulose HEC (HMEC): non-ionic, pH-insensitive, thickened latex paint is a flocculation uneven system, matt potential, biodegradation.

Inorganic: Bentonite has large thixotropic properties and has little effect on medium and high shear viscosity compared with alkali-soluble or alkali-swellable type and cellulose.

Formula selection, different decorative effects of the coating have different requirements for rheology:

In high PVC systems, HAS660 is used alone or in combination with PU.

In mercerizing, semi-gloss, and high-gloss coatings, HEUR with luster potential, such as DSX3116, DSX3256, DSX1550, etc., is used to avoid the use of thickeners with flocculation properties such as cellulose, which reduces gloss and limits the improvement of PVC.

Fine particle size, high emulsion, high pigment system, thickening curve is used to compare Newtonian thickener (such as DSX3075), avoid using thickener with low and medium shear viscosity (such as T1550).

Strong touch-denatured brushing coating, using strong thixotropic thickener DSX1130, DSX3290.
