The Alberta Provincial Government of Canada wrote to EU experts a few days ago that the European Union’s plan to classify non-traditional oil as a high-pollution fuel is unfair and poses potential concerns for the development of bilateral trade relations. The letter stated that the measures proposed by the EU have targeted and intentionally discriminated against fuel made from oil sands, which is in violation of the EU's international trade obligations. The Minister of Natural Resources of Canada said previously that if the EU passes the "Fuel Quality Act," Canada will appeal to the WTO.
The EU Commission of Governmental Experts is about to convene a meeting to debate the order of green fuels in order to develop measures for fuel suppliers to confirm options based on the carbon emissions of various fuels.
At present, Canada and the European Union are engaged in painstaking negotiations on a free trade agreement, and a series of issues are still under discussion, such as intellectual property rights and market access for agricultural products.
