A newly developed lithium-ion battery is used as the power supply for the BMW XVxDrive40e plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) (Fig. 1). The battery unit is produced by South Korea's Samsung SDI. Compared with the PHEV premium sports car “i8†launched by BMW in 2014, the current capacity has increased by 30%.
Samsung SDI provided lithium-ion batteries for the BMW i8 and the pure electric vehicle (EV) "i3" (see this site's report). The two companies announced in July 2014 that they had signed a memorandum on expanding the supply of battery cells. There is also a cooperative relationship in the technical development of battery cells.
Battery cell shape has not changed
The X5 xDrive40e uses a battery capacity of 26 Ah. The i8 is equipped with a battery unit of 20Ah. BMW said, "Improved capacity through improved battery materials" (Gerhard Thiel, head of X5 xDrive40e development). The newly developed battery cell voltage is 4.1V. The positive electrode uses a mixed material of a nickel-manganese-cobaltate lithium (NMC) system and a lithium manganate (LMO) system.

Although the battery cell's current carrying capacity increases, the shape, number, and voltage of the cell remain unchanged. The battery unit is square and has an external size of 173 x 85 x 21mm. The weight is 720g. The battery unit has the same shape as the i8 battery unit. This is "To apply technology assets such as batteries and power electronics developed through the i8" (Thiel).
The X5 xDrive40e inherits many of the i8's motorized technologies. The battery pack consists of 96 cells with a voltage of 355V. The number and voltage of the battery cells are the same as i8. The same applies to the water cooling method used to suppress the deterioration of the battery cells.
The X5 xDrive40e uses 16 battery cells to form a battery module and uses 6 modules in combination. The configuration is double-layered, with three battery modules placed side by side and mounted under the luggage compartment floor (Figure 2). Compared with the prototype car "X5", the maximum baggage height was reduced by 2 to 3cm, but the baggage capacity of 500 to 1720L was ensured. (Reporter: Jiumi Xiushang)
