Affected by the cost of steel, global fastener prices rose

Bruce Darling, assistant manager of the US fastener distributor PorteousFastener Company's materials management department, told the Southwestern Fastener Association (SFA) of the Southwest Fastener Association that fastener prices have started to rise in the past decade due to rising steel prices:

At the end of 2003, Taiwan’s steel price was US$364 per ton, while China’s steel price was US$375 per ton. In the second quarter of 2012, Taiwan’s steel price was US$825 per ton, and China’s US$708. Both prices were lower than at the end of 2011. The volatility of the US dollar caused the steel prices to increase in 2010 and 2011, and then fell this year.

In the first quarter of 2012, steel prices fell due to weak demand. Darling explained that this price level is the price that the current distributor receives from the fastener importer.

The stable steel prices in the second quarter of 2012 reflect the appreciation of the United States dollar against Taiwan. Darling said that this price sets the price of the current purchase order for the importer.

In the fourth quarter of 2011, the American steelworks discovered that due to the sales growth of automobiles, farm implements and oil drilling equipment, the demand for steel products increased, and the United States had new investments in steel production capacity.

Taiwan: Steel prices will increase in the third quarter. Taiwan's steel prices are expected to stabilize in the second quarter and begin to rise in the third quarter.

China: Steel prices will stabilize; Darling predicts that China's steel prices will hardly change in the next 6-9 months.

The volume of transactions in Europe was sluggish, while the U.S. demand grew but lacked rapid development. At present, there is oversupply of steel products. Even if there is a small increase in demand, some of them are absorbed by wire suppliers and factories themselves.

Darling added that India’s steel prices have not always been stable, and other details such as labels, pallets, payment terms and container quality appear to be the problem.

Thailand: Steel prices are stable — Darling said that Thailand's supply status is quite stable. One of Porteous's suppliers told Darling that they felt no pressure on steel prices. Sufficient supply and no shortage of concerns.
